What is Myofascial Release?

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a hands-on manual therapy technique used at Marks Chiropractic that addresses the body's connective tissue, known as fascia. Fascia is a web-like substance that surrounds and interconnects all of our muscles, bones, organs, and nerves. When this connective tissue becomes restricted or dysfunctional, it can lead to pain, stiffness, and limited range of motion.
How Does Myofascial Release Work?
MFR techniques involve applying gentle, sustained pressure to areas of the body where the fascia is restricted. This pressure can help to:
Release tension: By gently applying pressure, we can help break down adhesions and restrictions within the fascia, allowing for improved blood flow and reduced tension.
Improve flexibility: MFR can help to increase range of motion by releasing tight muscles and improving joint mobility.
Reduce pain: By addressing the underlying cause of pain, such as restricted fascia, MFR can help to alleviate discomfort and improve overall function.
What Conditions Can Myofascial Release Help?
MFR has been shown to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions, including:
Chronic pain: Conditions like back pain, neck pain, and headaches can often be linked to myofascial restrictions.
Muscle strains and sprains: MFR can help to speed up recovery and reduce pain associated with muscle injuries.
Posture problems: By addressing muscle imbalances and releasing tight fascia, MFR can help to improve posture and reduce associated pain.
Scar tissue: MFR can help to break down scar tissue and improve tissue mobility after surgery or injury.
What to Expect During a Myofascial Release Session:
During an MFR session, your chiropractor will use their hands to gently apply pressure to specific areas of your body. You may experience sensations such as:
Deep pressure: The pressure applied during MFR can feel deep, but it should not be painful.
Release: As the restrictions in the fascia begin to release, you may feel a sense of warmth, tingling, or even a slight muscle twitch.
Alternatives: At our Marathon Chiropractic Clinic we often use an instrument to work fascia tissue in addition to using dry needling as a tool to modify fascia when necessary.
