From Shin Splints to Sprained Ankles: Find Your Chiropractor For Running Injuries

Spring is in the air, and for runners and track athletes in the Wausau area that means one thing: competition season is upon us! Whether you're pounding the pavement or dominating the track, pushing your limits is part of the thrill. But with increased training comes the risk of injury. Don't let shin splints, sprained ankles, or knee pain sideline you when playoffs are just around the corner. Here at Marks Chiropractic, we excel in helping runners and track athletes overcome common injuries and get back to peak performance, using evidence-based treatments like exercise rehabilitation, laser therapy, and dry needling.

Common Running Injuries and How We Can Help You Recover Faster:

  • Shin Splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome): This overuse injury causes pain along the inner shinbone. When considering the Fredericson classification system, diagnosis begins with periosteal edema (grade 1) followed by progressive marrow involvement (grades 2 and 3), and eventually cortical stress fracture (grades 4a and 4b). Based on your diagnosis treatment recommendations can vary widely. This may include rest (including full non-weight bearing), specific strengthening exercises, and manual therapy techniques to improve flexibility and blood flow. Cold laser therapy or high intensity laser therapy can also accelerate healing by reducing inflammation and promoting tissue repair. Expect recovery timelines to range from a few weeks for mild cases (grades 1-2) to several months for more severe ones (grades 3-4b).

  • Sprained Ankles (Anterior Talofibular Ligament Injuries): Rolling your ankle is a common occurrence for runners and track athletes. Depending on the severity of the tear or tissue damage, treatment may involve rest, movement, ice, compression, and elevation. We can then guide you through a progressive exercise program to restore strength, stability, and proprioception (your body's awareness of joint position). Early intervention with laser therapy can significantly reduce pain and inflammation, allowing for a faster return to training. Proprioception is a very important concept here and recovering proprioception ability is key for recovery (more on this another time).

  • Knee Injuries: From runner's knee (patellofemoral pain syndrome) to iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS), knee pain can significantly impact your performance. We'll perform a thorough examination to pinpoint the source of the discomfort and create a treatment plan that may include chiropractic adjustments, targeted muscle therapy, and specific exercises to improve flexibility, strength, and mobility.

  • Plantar Fasciitis: This inflammation of the plantar fascia, the tissue connecting your heel to your toes, can cause debilitating heel pain. We use a combination of chiropractic adjustments, plantar fascial stretches, and myofascial release techniques to address the underlying cause and alleviate pain. Laser therapy can also be highly effective in reducing inflammation and promoting tissue healing.

The Evidence-Based Approach to Running Injury Recovery:

At Marks Chiropractic, we understand that getting back to training quickly and safely is crucial. That's why we base our treatments on the latest scientific evidence.  We'll discuss treatment options with you and explain the research supporting their effectiveness. This collaborative approach empowers you to be an active participant in your recovery journey.

Beyond Treatment: Preventing Running Injuries

While we excel at helping you recover from injuries, prevention is always our top priority. We can create a personalized injury prevention program that incorporates:

  • Running form analysis: We can assess your running form and identify any biomechanical weaknesses that could contribute to future injuries.

  • Strength training: Building strong core and lower body muscles helps absorb impact and reduce stress on your joints.

  • Stretching and mobility exercises: Maintaining proper flexibility helps prevent muscle strains and imbalances.

  • Proper footwear selection: We can recommend shoes that provide optimal support and cushioning for your specific running style.
