Neck pain is a common ailment affecting millions of individuals worldwide. Neck pain often is due to a combination of poor posture, repetitive or constant stress (this would include prolonged sitting such as at a computer), or underlying musculoskeletal issues. While some may associate chiropractic care with spinal manipulation or "Adjustments", our practice can often utilize a gentler, movement-based approach that prioritizes patient comfort and long-term relief. In this article, we'll explore how we treat neck pain without relying on cracking the neck, focusing instead on the McKenzie Method and its benefits for our patients.
At our chiropractic office, Dr. Lund is a trained practitioner in the McKenzie Method, a widely respected approach to musculoskeletal therapy developed by physiotherapist Robin McKenzie out of New Zealand. Unlike traditional chiropractic techniques that may involve forceful manipulations, the McKenzie Method emphasizes patient education and active involvement in their recovery process. This involves a progression of forces often beginning with a simple neck/chin retractions done repetitively (See video on this Here).
Instead of relying on neck cracking, we utilize a variety of movement-based exercises tailored to each patient's needs. Beginning with simple cervical retraction exercises in a lying supine position, we gradually progress to more advanced techniques like seated retraction-extension exercises (or chin in- tip the head back for those that have performed these movements). These movements are designed to improve posture, strengthen neck muscles, restore joint mobility, and alleviate pain without the need for more aggressive spinal manipulation.
Numerous studies have demonstrated the efficacy of the McKenzie Method in treating neck pain and other musculoskeletal issues. Research has shown that identifying a patient's directional preference—specific movements or positions that alleviate or exacerbate their pain—can guide treatment and lead to better outcomes. By addressing the underlying cause of pain through targeted exercises, we can help patients achieve lasting relief and improved function.
Avoiding the "Cheat Code":
While manipulation of the spine can provide instantaneous relief in some cases, it's important to recognize that it may not completely address the root cause of the problem. By focusing on movement-based therapies like the McKenzie Method, we aim to provide our patients with sustainable solutions that promote long-term healing and overall well-being. In our office Dr. Lund often refers to spinal manipulation as a "Cheat Code" to restore range of motion more quickly than if we utilize exercise or muscle work alone. This cheat code can be extremely beneficial for many, but for those that do not like the idea of it there are certainly other means to improvement.
The Activator (Aka "Clicker") Instrument
Utilizing the Activator instrument is another method we use to assist in improving mobility without the typical manipulation done by hand. Here are a few benefits from using the Activator we see in our office:Precision Adjustments:
The activator instrument allows for precise and targeted adjustments, making it an excellent choice for patients who prefer a gentler approach or have specific areas of concern that require focused attention.
Comfortable for Patients: Many patients find the activator instrument to be more comfortable compared to manual adjustments, especially those who may be sensitive to the traditional manual manipulation techniques.
Consistent Force Application: Unlike manual adjustments, which can vary in force depending on the location and degree of joint stiffness, the activator instrument delivers a consistent force each time, ensuring reliable and reproducible results.
Suitable for Diverse Patient Needs: The activator instrument can be customized to accommodate the unique needs of each patient, whether they require a subtle adjustment or a more aggressive manipulation, making it a versatile tool in chiropractic care.
Enhanced Patient Experience: By offering the activator instrument as part of your chiropractic services, you can enhance the overall patient experience by providing a range of treatment options tailored to individual preferences and comfort levels.
Complementary Technique: The activator instrument can complement traditional chiropractic techniques, allowing for a comprehensive approach to care that addresses a wide range of musculoskeletal issues and promotes improved joint mobility.
Evidence-Based Practice: There is a growing body of research supporting the effectiveness of the activator instrument in chiropractic care, adding credibility to its use as a valuable treatment modality.
Neck pain is a prevalent issue that can significantly impact daily life, but it doesn't have to be treated with spinal manipulation or invasive procedures. At our office, we prioritize patient comfort and long-term relief through the gentle and effective approach of the McKenzie Method. One of the biggest things our patients enjoy with this is learning a set of tools they can employ if their symptoms return, whether that be on a Sunday or six months from now before calling into the office for assistance. By empowering our patients with movement-based alternatives and personalized care, we strive to help them achieve lasting relief, improve their musculoskeletal health, and learn tools that they can utilize outside the office to both improve their current condition and prevent it from returning. If you're struggling with neck pain or any musculoskeletal issue, we invite you to experience the difference of our approach to chiropractic care.
